Stephen J. Taddie, CBE CFM

Managing Partner

Stephen-J.-Taddie.jpgMr. Taddie is co-founder and Managing Partner of Stellar Capital Management. His primary investment responsibilities involve establishing the firm's economic outlook and forecast and using that research to provide input to the Investment Committee regarding asset allocation, sector, and industry weighting decisions for stocks, and yield curve analysis for bonds.

Mr. Taddie has over 30 years of professional experience in the investment field. Beginning his career as a Merrill Lynch Financial Consultant in Arizona, he finished his brokerage industry tenure in branch management with Prudential Securities on the East Coast. In the early 1990's he established a Phoenix, Arizona branch office for a mid-sized investment advisory firm, and in the late 1990's established S.J. Taddie, Inc., Investment Counsel, prior to co-founding Stellar Capital Management in July of 2000. He has worked with a select group of clients ranging from publicly traded corporations, government entities, and Native American Indian Tribes, to high net worth individuals and families across the country. He is frequently asked to speak on economic and investment management trends, has authored numerous articles and has often been quoted on the same subjects.

Mr. Taddie is a member of the National Association for Business Economists (NABE), a Panelist for the NABE Outlook (National Forecast) and the NABE Financial Industry Roundtable, the Western Blue Chip Economic Panel, the Arizona Blue Chip Economic Panel, and a member of the Arizona Legislative Finance Advisory Committee. He is a member and Past President of the Arizona Economic Round Table, a member and Past President of the Central Arizona Estate Planning Conference, a member of the CFA Institute and the Phoenix CFA Society, and an Arbitrator for FINRA. He is a past member of the Economic Club of Phoenix, the Western Pension & Benefits Conference, Arizona Town Hall, and the Madison School District Financial Oversight Committee. He has served on the Executive Board of the Desert Botanical Gardens Foundation, the Advisory and Executive Boards of the Foundation for Burns & Trauma, the Executive Boards for the Foothills Foundation, the Phoenix Camelback Rotary Club, and the Finance Committee for the Desert Botanical Gardens. He has also volunteered with Junior Achievement and coached youth sports teams.

Mr. Taddie holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business and Economics from Lehigh University, and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Phoenix. He has earned The Certified Business Economist™ (CBE™), which is the certification in business economics, and data analytics developed and owned by the National Association for Business Economics, and the Certified Financial Manager (CFM), which is the certification in financial management issued by the Merrill Lynch Institute, Donald T. Regan School of Advanced Financial Management.

John Reimer, CFA

Director of Research

John-Reimer.JPGIn addition to managing client portfolios, Mr. Reimer's primary investment responsibility involves managing the firm's proprietary security valuation model and coordinating that analysis with the firm's economic outlook to provide the Investment Committee with input on the relative value of individual securities and credit quality for securities followed by and being considered by the firm.

John is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), who has over 25 years of investment experience. He began his career with American Century Investors in 1991 as an Equity Analyst, and then served as Director of Research at Sentinel Pension Institute, investment consultants to over 60 Fortune 500 company pension plans. He established Advantage Capital Management, an investment management and consulting firm, and later became a portfolio manager at PacWest Financial Management prior to joining Stellar Capital Management.

He is a member of the CFA Institute, the Phoenix CFA Society, the Central Arizona Estate Planning Council and a past member of the Los Angeles CFA Society and the Kansas City CFA Society. He has been quoted in Pensions & Investments Magazine and the Arizona Republic. He has been a volunteer lecturer at schools on the subjects of finance and investing and has provided educational seminars across the state. He is Board Member and past Treasurer of Rosie’s House, a music academy for children, a past member of the Men's Art Council, a support organization for Phoenix Art Museum, and has served on the VinArte and Copperstate 1000 committees, two of the largest fundraisers for the museum.

Mr. Reimer holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance from Arizona State University and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Missouri, Kansas City.

PhilIp A. LaMell

Senior Portfolio Manager

Philip LamelIn addition to managing client portfolios, Mr. LaMell's primary investment responsibility involves conducting fundamental research on investments followed by and being considered by the firm, and coordinating that analysis with the firm's economic outlook and valuation estimates to provide input to the Investment Committee on the factors that could add or detract from the attractiveness of individual securities.

Mr. LaMell has over 40 years of investment and banking experience. He began his career as a Trust Officer at The First National Bank of Chicago, advancing to Trust Investment Officer at The First National Bank and Trust Company of Barrington, Illinois. He was recruited by Valley National Bank of Arizona (later Bank One/JP Morgan Chase) in 1979, to be a Vice President and Senior Portfolio Manager, and later held the positions of Investment Strategist/Marketing Manager, Manager of Investors and Shareholder Relations, and Special Projects Manager developing Valley Capital Management and Sun Eagle Mutual Funds before assuming the responsibilities of Managing Director/Portfolio Management – Western Division. He spent seven years at Merrill Lynch Asset Management as Vice President and Senior Portfolio Manager with responsibilities for Arizona, Colorado and Utah, and most recently served as Vice President and Senior Portfolio Manager for JP Morgan Chase, responsible for their largest and most complex investment management and Trust Relationships.

Mr. LaMell has served on the Planning Commission of Arlington Heights, Illinois, the board of the Scottsdale YMCA, as a member of the National Investor Relations Institute (NIRI), and as President of Arizona NIRI. He is currently a member of the CFA Institute, the Economic Club of Phoenix, the Phoenix CFA Society, and serves on the Investment Committee of the Boy Scouts of America, Grand Canyon Council. He has also been active in youth activities and coached youth sports teams.

Mr. LaMell holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Illinois majoring in Finance with an Economics minor.

Robert Elzholz

Portfolio Manager

Rob_Elzholz_2014_web.jpgIn addition to managing client portfolios, Mr. Elzholz's primary investment responsibility involves conducting research on the managed investments followed by and being considered by the firm for individual clients and participant-directed institutional retirement plans. This research is coordinated with the firm's economic outlook to provide input to the Investment Committee on the specific managed portfolios used, and to implement the Committee driven decisions.

Rob has over 12 years of financial industry experience. He began his investment career as a Financial Advisor with USAA, served as Vice President of Investments with JP Morgan Securities, later served as the Trading Investment Manager with REDW Stanley Wealth Advisors, and was responsible for the Phoenix operations prior to joining Stellar Capital Management in 2014. He has worked with clients ranging from Native American Tribes, private and publicly traded companies, and individuals and families across the country.

He is a 2016 Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Level I Candidate, holds the Accredited Investment Fiduciary (AIF), the Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor (CRPC) and the Accredited Asset Management Specialist (AAMS) professional designations. He is a member of the Turnaround Management Association, and has been involved United Way campaigns and the Central Phoenix and West Valley Child Crisis Centers.

Mr. Elzholz holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Technical Management from DeVry University.

Richard D. Stern, CFA

Senior Advisor

Richard D. SternMr. Stern, a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), was co-founder of Stellar Capital Management and has over 50 years of professional experience in the investment field. Mr. Stern was a First Vice President of Newburger, Loeb & Co. in New York City beginning in 1962, mainly as a supervisory research analyst and floor partner; a Senior Vice President and Director of Equity Research at Central Trust Company in Cincinnati; and a Vice President, managing both the bank and trust investments, at Great Western Bank in Phoenix before establishing his own investment advisory firm in 1984 and co-founding Stellar Capital Management in 2000.  He has been published or quoted in Barron's, Medical Economics, the Wall Street Transcript, The Arizona Republic, The Business Journal, Employee Benefits Journal, and Trusts and Estates. He is profiled in Who's Who in America and Who’s Who in the World.

Mr. Stern has served on the boards of the Phoenix CFA Society, the Phoenix Chamber Music Society, the American Jewish Committee, the Asian Arts Council, the University Club of Phoenix and the Arizona Theatre Company. He served as President of the Arizona Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation and on its national planned giving committee and as a Board Member of the Harvard Business School Club of Arizona. He is currently a member of the CFA Institute and the Phoenix CFA Society, Vice President of the Princeton Alumni Association of Central and Northern Arizona, a member of the Alumni Schools Committee for Princeton University, and an Executive Board Member of the Anti-Defamation League, as well as an Associate National Commissioner.

Mary E. Collum
Mary Collum

Senior Advisor

Mrs. Collum, a Senior Advisor for Stellar, is responsible for creating strategic relationships and alliances with organization leaders to support key business initiatives. She is also a consultant for community banks and local businesses.

Mary has over 25 years of financial services experience, most recently serving as the Senior Vice President of Premier Wealth Management for National Bank of Arizona. She was the Founder and Director of the private bank, leading a team of finance professionals including Wealth Advisors, Commercial Bankers & Treasury Officers who focused on providing a unique client experience. Prior to forming the Private Bank, Mary served as the first female Regional Credit Manager for National Bank of Arizona.

She has been deeply involved with non-profit organizations over the years, currently serving on the Board of the Fresh Start Women’s Foundation, and serves as Treasurer on the Executive Board for the Phoenix Country Club. Mary is past Chairman of the Arizona Foundation for Women and the Hon Kachina Council, past Director of Central Phoenix Women, and founding member of the NB|AZ Women’s Financial Group. Other recent community engagements include the Scottsdale Cultural Council and the National Kidney Foundation of Arizona.

Mrs. Collum holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance from Arizona State University, and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Phoenix and earned a Masters Level Banking Degree from the Pacific Coast Banking School. She is a graduate of Valley Leadership Class of 33 and completed the FBI Phoenix Citizens’ Academy in 2014.


Sheryl L. Rayner

Director of Fiduciary Services

Sheryl RaynerMrs. Rayner’s primary responsibilities are to manage the complex relationships between our Fiduciary Clients and Custodians. She also oversees all operational and administrative aspects of the firm, and serves as the firm’s Chief Compliance Officer.

Sheryl has been with Stellar Capital Management since its formation and has played a key role in its development. She began her career in the financial services industry in 1994 and joined S.J. Taddie, Inc. Investment Counsel in 1998. She has over 25 years of experience in operations and administration, and has been involved in Phoenix RIA Compliance Roundtable for over 10 years.

She is a founding Board Member and former Vice President and Treasurer of EducAid International, an organization dedicated to promoting and providing education and health care to the world’s most underserved communities.  She is a founding Board Member, Past President and former Treasurer of the Women's Metropolitan Art Council, a support organization of Phoenix Art Museum.  She also served as co-chair of both the Programming and Development Committees.  She was an active member of her local PTA and has worked with both the Foundation for Burns and Trauma and the Foothills Foundation.

Mrs. Rayner holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy, magna cum laude, from Arizona State University.

CARRIE A. GIBSONSonya Spagnola

Office Manager

Ms. Gibson, Office Manager for Stellar, is responsible for bookkeeping, internal projects, payroll, and external communications.  She also oversees special projects including marketing, Requests for Proposals (RFPs) and vendor research.

Carrie has over 15 years of progressive Accounting and Human Resources experience.  Carrie’s career experience includes a working internship at North Scottsdale CPA & Consulting Firm and most recently business development from infancy to dominance in the commercial and leisure maritime satellite communications arena for Intellian Technologies.  A prominent international manufacturer and wholesaler of maritime communications equipment.  Carrie was instrumental in the development and growth management of Intellian from 1 privately held US office and headquarters in Seoul, South Korea to 8 worldwide locations and taking the organization public on the KOSDAQ in 2016.

Ms. Gibson’s involvement with the community stems from her love of animals and time living in Orange County, CA and includes memberships in the Arizona Animal Welfare League & SPCA, Surfrider Foundation and an annual supporter of The Coast Guard Foundation.  Carrie has served as a member of the Accounting and Financial Women’s Alliance.

Carrie’s accounting education includes 6 years of collegiate studies at local colleges including Phoenix College and Western International University.

James P. cooneyJames Cooney

Client Service Specialist

Mr. Cooney’s primary responsibilities include handling the back-office coordination between clients, custodians, and portfolio managers, and is part of the team that handles multiple internal projects as they are developed and implemented.

James joined Stellar Capital Management in January, 2017. He began his career in financial services in 2011, working as an intern during his last two years of undergraduate work for Phoenix based registered investment advisers, joining Charles Schwab as an Investment Broker in 2012 and later serving as a Financial Analyst for their Risk and Operations departments prior to joining Stellar.

He has taught classes for Junior Achievement in the K-12th grade programs to help foster financial literacy, work readiness, and entrepreneurship to inspire students to dream big and reach their potential. He currently serves as Assistant Coach of the Varsity Soccer team at Brophy College Preparatory, and has served as a Soccer Coach for the Sunshine League, a sports program for special needs children and adults. During his undergraduate studies, he served as Chapter President of the Delta Mu Delta business honors society.

Mr. Cooney holds a Bachelor of Science in Finance and Economics, graduating summa cum laude, from Grand Canyon University. He is currently pursuing his Master of Science in Business Analytics at Grand Canyon University.

Derek S. Taddeiderek taddei

Client Service Specialist

Mr. Taddei’s primary responsibilities include handling the back-office coordination between ERISA and non-ERISA participant directed retirement plan clients, custodians, and portfolio managers, and is part of the team that handles multiple internal projects as they are developed and implemented.

Derek joined Stellar Capital Management in January, 2013 as an Intern. Before joining Stellar he was a college student-athlete playing Division I and Division II Men’s Soccer. He has served as a Soccer Coach for the Sunshine League, a sports program for special needs children and adults, and volunteered for various non-profit organizations behind the scenes during fund raising events.

Mr. Taddei is currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Economics at Arizona State University.
